How We Test
Every review starts in a real living room, not a soundproof booth. Here’s exactly what we do before we tell you whether something is worth buying.
Our Testing Environment
We evaluate every product in ordinary living-room conditions — the kind of space, furniture, and ambient noise most people actually own — instead of an acoustically treated test chamber. A soundbar that measures beautifully in an anechoic lab can still sound thin against a real wall of bookshelves, a hardwood floor, and a TV mounted a few inches too high. We test for that reality.
Our Test Pipeline
-
Unbox and set up exactly as a typical buyer would.
We follow the included instructions and default app pairing process without shortcuts, and note anywhere setup is confusing or undocumented.
-
Run a baseline calibration pass.
Where a product includes room-correction or auto-calibration features, we test both the calibrated and factory-default sound profiles.
-
Play a fixed content rotation across three rooms.
The same movie scenes, TV dialogue, music tracks, and game audio are used across every product we test, so results are comparable.
-
Score against a fixed criteria set.
Every product is rated on the same categories below, by more than one listener, to reduce single-reviewer bias.
-
Compare directly against similarly priced alternatives.
A score means little in isolation — we always test a product alongside at least one direct competitor at a similar price point.
-
Re-test after major firmware updates.
Soundbars and home theater systems often change meaningfully after a firmware update — we revisit our notes when that happens.
What We Score
Dialogue Clarity
Can you understand quiet or mumbled dialogue at a normal volume without reaching for the remote every few minutes?
Bass Impact & Control
Does low-end response feel present without turning muddy, boomy, or overwhelming in a normal-sized room?
Soundstage & Surround
Does audio feel like it fills the room, and — where advertised — does virtual or real surround actually create a sense of space?
Setup & App Experience
How much friction is there between unboxing and a working system, and is the companion app reliable day to day?
Price-to-Performance
How does the listening experience compare to alternatives at the same price, not to unrelated products at a different tier?
Build & Long-Term Reliability
Where possible, we track how a product holds up over weeks of regular use, and revisit older reviews if patterns emerge.
Our Rating Scale
Every product we formally review receives a score out of 10 in each category above, which we average into an overall score. Here’s what those numbers mean:
Some products we test are provided by manufacturers for review, and some are purchased independently. Regardless of how a unit reaches us, review units are never a condition of a favorable score — see our full Affiliate Disclosure for more on how we’re funded.
Think We Got Something Wrong?
If a review doesn’t match your own experience with a product, we want to hear about it.
